The Word:
“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God. For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.” 2 Timothy 1:7-8 & 12 (NASB)
The Story:
I am always amazed at the different ways God chooses to reveal something to us. For me, it was regarding outreach. I admittedly struggle with the idea of approaching people who I don’t know. I grew up in an environment where fear flourished. As long as I’ve been a believer, it was not until recently that the Lord brought a question to mind, “How did I come to know Him?” A couple of young women sacrificed their time to visit un-churched kids and run a bus route on Sunday to take us to church. They would teach us songs, talk about Jesus, and invest in our lives. I’m sure at times this was challenging. If they had any fear, we never knew it. They just did what God called them to do.
The Reflection:
Like Paul said, we should not be ashamed of the testimony of God but should join in with those who are suffering for the gospel. We can do this because the One who we trust in will take care of what He has entrusted us to do. Do we find ourselves being timid about our faith? How often are we speaking boldly into others’ lives about Christ? What, if anything, is keeping us shackled in fear?
The Application:
When we feel nervous or apprehensive about outreach, we should step outside of our comfort zone and allow God to work through us. The blessing that comes with being obedient is worth the butterflies.
The Prayer:
Father, please help us be sensitive to Your prompting in sharing Jesus with others as to not miss the precious opportunities that You put before us. Amen.
